April Update

The Haus pup is worn out from spring cleaning already.

  • Our plans to have an IRC presence again have been stalled due to currently dead UPS batteries. The efforts to recondition the existing batteries has sadly failed to bare fruit. If anyone has any usable batteries that they aren’t using or would like to donate some new ones, this would greatly benefit the Haus because there are several other current project that have also been put on hold with the battery shortage. If you can help, please email us at info [at] thinkhaus.org. We’d sure be glad to hear from you.
  • It looks like our spring cleaning will be going on right until summer as The Haus continues to get more organized we seem to continue to be adding more things to the lost and found box. All current and former members please be sure to check-in if you find you are missing something before mid-May as anything not claimed by then will either be re-homed or recycled.
  • Our members-only Hot Dog dinner starts at 6pm on Tuesday with everything to be cleaned up when door open at 7pm for open|haus. We are able to do this through members generously either bringing hot dogs/buns or paying-what-they-can so we can buy hot dogs and buns for the following week and well as everyone cleaning up after themselves before open|haus begins. It is only through working together as members that this dinner can happen and we know that you’ve all be enjoying it because you’ve eating a lot of hot dogs these last few months. Everyone needs to continue to give what they can and help out where they can so we can continue to happily eat dinner together.
  • Lastly, the month The Haus has been inspired by spring and the concept of starting anew by looking in the direction of how we can upcycle the cast-off materials that can be found easily around us in order to make them useful and beautiful again. Projects in the works are everything from using the laser to cut cardboard to make cardboard furniture as well as DIY drop spindles that can spin plastic grocery bags that people just usually throw away. Keep your eyes peeled for future posts with pictures and updates.

open|haus 6th Anniversary

OpenHausOn this day in 2009, a group of individuals would come together for the first time.   During the following weeks while meeting in the basement of Freeway Coffee House, this unnamed group would come to create think|haus.  It wouldn’t be until June 1st, 2009 that we moved into a permanent residence on Niagara St. and really began to build our community. Over the next 8 or so weeks, we will pull out some of our pictures from over the years to share!

We are now located at 25 Dundurn St. North and have continued every Tuesday to open our doors at 7 pm to invite in the members of the general public.

We’d love for you to come in and show off the projects you’ve been working on or if you are stuck on a project and need other people to help you brainstorm answers we are here to help you with your questions too!

Digitigrade Stilts nearing completion

Questions have been asked about these stilt things. They are digitigrade stilts. They change the walking motion so that it is akin to me walking on my tip toes…. but also stilts.

11050798_10152578487897127_9092624300301732729_o DSCN7877

They are based off of a design I found online. I did make the design online and the current design is Mk.2. I did not email the creator of the design online, but his old design has a factor of safety of 0.8-0.9 or so. Really dangerous. I did a bunch of CAD, structural analysis and FEA to make sure that these will take the load. Using my engineering degree for something, I guess.

FEA

FEA tests. Note: full weight on one linkage.

And as for why I am making it? Because it is clear cut, straight foward, and should look good at the end. Webbing, testing, refinement, and a few small machining tasks to go!

Bring a Pie for Pi Day 2015

Image from openclipart.org

Image from openclipart.org

Pi Day is just around the corner, so come join us Saturday, March 14 to honor that special holiday of math-lovers everywhere. A celebration of the mathematical constant pi with…..pie.

And this coming Pi Day isn’t just any old Pi Day either. It is actually a once-in-a-lifetime event because on 3.14.15 at 9:26:53 the date and time will correspond to the first 10 digits of pi (π = 3.141592653) making it a “Epic Pi Day” which is an event that happens only once per century.

You don’t want to miss what is going to be the best Pi Day of this entire century! No particular variety of pie is associated with Pi Day, so feel free to buy (or make) your favorite type of pie and head over to 25 Dundurn St North in Hamilton, Ontario and go in the back door and then up the stairs to join in the celebration.

See you Saturday, March 14 @1pm

Pi Day Note just for Kids — NationalPiDay.org has many printable worksheets with activities like measuring polygons to estimate pi, word searches, jumbles, and crossword puzzles that emphasize relevant words such as circle, diameter, and circumference.
